On their quest to "spread democracy", you play as a Helldiver - an elite soldier trained to set out to distant planets in order to 'liberate' them. In the year 2084, all countries on planet Earth merged together, creating Super Earth. Likewise, extractions are not done via shuttle, and stratagems in general are completely absent.īottom line, if you want to see a fresh take on the life and times of a Helldiver, this is a good book just be sure to go in with an open mind and no expectations.Missing out on Helldivers is like shooting yourself in the foot - something you may actually do once or twice whilst playing this game by Arrowhead Studios, which finally debuted on PC following its initial bow on PlayStation. We also get to see the launch bay, where the Divers all climb in their tubes, but rather than getting shot into terra firma from low orbit, these helldivers parachute in. If I had to guess, I would wager the author played the game a little bit, but most of his story was just derived from the word “Helldivers” I was expecting something a bit more tongue in cheek, along the lines of the Starship Troopers trope that Arrowhead clearly borrowed so heavily from but I get that the author wanted to take the core idea and run with it. There is some fan service including each of the emote buttons getting play in addition to the classics like "move" and "wait here" and "affirmative" I also caught at least one reference "to the SKYYY.” This isn’t a very nuanced novel, so once you get your initial introduction to all the characters, it’s pretty easy to see where the story is going to go with them. Class struggles are evident and life is hard for everyone. He struggles to deal with what he has seen and done, copes via moonshine and yet still does his damndest to keep his fellow divers alive. There’s a clear main character, but he’s not very well developed beyond what you’d get from your standard Hollywood action flick. They are the elite soldier class in this world, garnering equal amounts of fear and respect. Life expectancy is not very high, the story follows a grizzled veteran who has survived more dives than anyone has a right to. Humanity has been nearly entirely eliminated, leaving behind a radioactive wasteland that humans only step into in order to retrieve needed components to keep their ships aloft.ĭivers are as you would expect. Written by Nicholas Sansbury Smith (famous for the "Extinction Cycle" zombie novels), it's a pretty thrilling adventure set in a dystopian future. There is no SuperEarth, no mention of Libertea (boo), and no aliens.still, all that said, it was a pretty good beach read that I would recommend. Since I'm writing this review here, I think the most salient point is that this is NOT the helldiver world that we are living in the game. TL DR - it's a good story, but takes some Liber-tea with the world I expected. I just wanted to give you all a heads up that this exists, and also to offer a quick review for those of you on the fence. Instead of packing my PS4 all the way to Hawaii, I found this book to scratch the itch while I sip my Liber-tea and lay around on the beach: I've been taking some well-earned time off from spreading democracy but can't seem to shake the Helldivers habit. Again, this isn't going to be enforced heavy-handedly, it's not like a single off-topic rant is bannable, but if you start spamming links to cash-for-click sites or whatever, you will get banned. This includes affiliate links and unrelated content. While we won't ban negative comments and so forth, if you have a repeated history of making caustic remarks for the sole purpose of being confrontational, we won't hesitate to ban - regardless of how monolithic you think you are in the community. We're not enforcing this rule as a form of censorship, we're enforcing this because subreddits tend to get lots of new players, and the last thing we as a community should do is make people tuck tail and run. Clearly jokes and stuff are fine, but if you're harassing someone, that's not cool. Other than that, have fun, and be excellent to each other! We're really passionate about the game, so we ask that posts in this subreddit be relevant to Helldivers - other content should go on /r/gaming or /r/games. This is an unofficial subreddit for Helldivers.
